The world has entered a strange and uncertain period. For many of us, it feels like we are living in a movie or novel or we wonder when we will wake from this bizarre dream.
Social distancing has become the new norm and how we need to be with each other. For some of us this may simply mean staying a few metres apart but for others, it may involve staying at home away from the world of infection.
This may be good news, if you love spending time alone, but we are aware that over time this can lead to loneliness, boredom and, possibly, depression.
At Hear-Clear we are in the business of hearing and communication, so we have brainstormed some ideas for staying socially connected during this time of enforced separateness.
One way, is to use video on your phone or computer to stay in touch. There are several ways to do this, using Facetime, Skype, Zoom or WhatsApp. Check with family members or ask for help to get it set up for you. It is quite common for families that live a distance apart to use these programs and once set up are not too hard to use.
Some fun ways to connect with children, grandchildren or nephews and nieces could be to
- read them a story over video, or
- show them some old photos of you and tell them what was happening
- do the crossword together or
- solve a puzzle together.
Now if you have a group of friends who also have video technology, this may be your chance to use it for staying in touch. Maybe you could discuss books you are reading, craft activities or baking ideas.
If you find yourself getting overwhelmed or anxious about the virus, please reach out and talk to someone; a neighbor, a friend, member of your family or Lifeline or Beyond Blue.
Hear-Clear will continue to provide services from our Dural office, unless we are required to close. Remember if you have a hearing concern, we are only a phone call away.
